Wesleyan Holds Off Women's Basketball

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's basketball team fell to Wesleyan by a 66-58 score on Sunday afternoon.

The hosts burst out to a 7-2 advantage when sophomore Emily Tripp (Wesport, Mass.) drilled a 3-pointer off a pass from senior Sami Ashton (Clinton, Conn.). Even though the Cardinals were able to bring the margin down to one, the Camels got a putback basket from senior Dana Muckstadt (Dover, Mass.) to stay ahead for the remainder of the opening frame.

The Cardinals, who trailed 19-16 after 10 minutes of action, hung around and went on an 8-1 run by not allowing the hosts to convert a field goal for more than a six-minute stretch. Caleigh Ryan made a pair of free throws as well as a jump shot during the stretch before the teams eventually went into halftime tied at 27s.

Wesleyan scored the opening four points of the second half by getting two free throws from Ava Tompkins as well as a layup from Katy O'Connor and never trailed for the remainder of the game. The Camels did not go away and came within two points on a pair of occasions, but the visitors always had an answer at the other end. The Cardinals embarked on a 14-4 run after junior Casey Walsh had brought the margin down to 51-49, and Tompkins and O'Connor combined to hit four charity shots in the last minute when the Camels were forced to to extend the margin to 12 at 65-53 and put the game on ice.

O'Connor and Tompkins each registered a double-double to lead the way for Wesleyan (9-7, NESCAC 1-3), which outrebounded the Camels by a 49-37 and pulled down 19 offensive boards. O'Connor finished with 17 points and 14 rebounds, while Tompkins had 11 points and 13 boards to go along with two blocked shots. Ryan chipped in 12 points.

Ashton paced Connecticut College (5-10, NESCAC 1-2) with 25 points and six rebounds. Muckstadt had a strong all-around performance with eight points, eight rebounds, three blocked shots, and two steals. Sophomore Claire Gulbin (Wilton, Conn.) also reached twin figures with 14 points.

Connecticut College will next travel to Westfield State for a non-conference game on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.
