Box Score HARTFORD, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's basketball team fell to Trinity in the second meeting of the season between the schools by a 60-57 decision at Oosting Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
Connecticut College (6-11, NESCAC 1-3) matched its largest lead when junior Casey Walsh (Phoenixville, Pa.) converted two free throws to make it 55-47 with 2:06 remaining. However, Trinity senior Peace Kabari took over the game to spark a rally of 11 unanswered.
The captain hit three free throws, converted a layup, and broke the 55-55 tie by driving in for another layup to put the Bantams ahead, 57-55, with 51 seconds left. Elizabeth Althoff then came away with a key block, and Bria Fuller added a shot from the charity stripe to make it a three-point game with 31 seconds on the clock.
Camel senior Sami Ashton (Clinton, Conn.) drilled a jumper while driving to bring the Camels within one in the waning seconds, but with the team forced to foul, Kabari tacked on two more points at the line to bring the margin back up to three. Ashton's 3-point attempt from the top of the key fell short, and the Bantams escaped with the victory.
The teams played a low-scoring game early with the Bantams holding an 11-8 lead through a quarter and 29-21 at halftime. But after Trinity went ahead by double digits at the 1:49 mark of the second on a pair of free throws by Bailey Hyland, senior Nancy Coulverson (Queens, N.Y.) closed out the scoring in the half by hitting a layup to begin a comeback.
Connecticut College continued to slowly chip away at the deficit in the third and regained the lead when Ashton set up Walsh for a trey to create a 34-33 score with 4:54 on the clock. However, the Bantams responded again and led 40-39 heading into the final frame.
The Camels seized the lead back in the fourth by having Walsh and Ashton combine for 11 points during a 12-2 run which made it 53-45 with three minutes remaining. Unfortunately, the team would not be able to hold the lead the rest of the way. Kabari netted 10 points over the last three minutes, allowing the Bantams to escape with the three-point victory.
Kabari led Trinity (13-4, NESCAC 4-1) with 22 points and 10 rebounds to go along with three assists. All three marks were team highs. Hyland added 12 points and seven boards, while Althoff had eight points and three blocked shots.
Ashton registered a double-double for Connecticut College (6-10, NESCAC 1-3) with 24 points and 10 rebounds. She also dished out three assists and finished with two steals. Sophomore Claire Gulbin (Wilton, Conn.) and Walsh netted 11 and nine points, respectively and senior Dana Muckstadt (Dover, Mass.) notched a team-leading five assists.
Connecticut College will continue a seven-game road trip at Williams on Friday evening at 7 p.m.
