Box Score MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Senior Sami Ashton (Clinton, Conn.) and sophomore Claire Gulbin (Wilton, Conn.) combined for 50 points in leading the Connecticut College women's basketball team to an 87-80 road victory over Middlebury on Saturday afternoon in Pepin Gym.
Middlebury shot 64.3 percent from the floor in the first quarter and led 16-8 at the 4:32 mark after getting a 3-pointer from Reagan McDonald. Maya Davis recorded an old-fashioned 3-point play to close out the frame, which ended with the Panthers leading by a 22-13 score.
The Camels, however, came out firing in the second quarter and outscored the hosts by an 18-6 margin to seize the lead. Sophomore Jenna Whelan (Bernardsville, N.J.) made it 31-28 by converting a layup, and the teams eventually went into the break tied at 34.
Both teams remained hot from the floor and shot over 55 percent during the third quarter. Connecticut College began the half on a 16-7 run, but the hosts came back with seven unanswered to slice the margin down to three at 52-49 on back-to-back treys by Davis and Michaela Sullivan. However, the Camels struck back and got a 3-pointer in the last minute from senior Ashley Howe (Saco, Maine) to move ahead by a 63-55 score through 30 minutes of action.
Even though Middlebury scored seven straight points to cut the deficit to 67-64 with 6:25 left, but the Camels had answers on the other end. Walsh drove in for a layup with 28 seconds remaining, and Ashton sank six free throws in the final minute to help the visitors seal the seven-point win.
Ashton provided 26 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists while shooting 17-of-20 from the charity stripe. Gulbin had 24 points and eight boards, while senior Ashley Howe (Saco, Maine) scored 11 points.
Sullivan scored a career-high 25 points to pace Middlebury (12-8, NESCAC 1-6) in the setback. Davis had 15 points to go along with five assists, and Claire Miller added 13 points.
Connecticut College (7-12, NESCAC 2-4) continues a seven-game road trip when it travels to face Bates on Friday evening at 7 p.m.
