Women's Basketball Concludes Season With Setback Against No. 5 Amherst on Senior Day

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's basketball team concluded its 2019-20 campaign with a 76-52 loss to No. 5 Amherst on Saturday afternoon at the Charles B. Luce Field House.

The first quarter was competitive with two ties and five lead changes. Both teams combined to miss their first nine shots until senior Jill Nee (Dorchester, Mass.) broke the scoreless deadlock with a layup that was set up by classmate Sami Ashton (Clinton, Conn.). After missing their first six shots, the Mammoths finally got on the board at the 5:28 mark when Cam Hendricks drove in for a layup. Senior Nancy Coulverson (Queens, N.Y.) put the Camels ahead once the teams got going offensively by sinking a free throw to make it 10-9, but the Mammoths ended the quarter on a 4-0 run.

Amherst continued a streak of scoring 10 unanswered in the second and began pulling away. Even though the Camels were able to slice the deficit down to six when sophomore Claire Gulbin (Wilton, Conn.) drilled a 3-pointer to create a 23-17 score, the Mammoths were able to recover and burst ahead by twin figures by nine straight. Dani Valdez extended the lead to as many as 15 in the half by converting two free throws, and a layup by Hannah Fox gave the visitors a comfortable 34-21 advantage at the break.

The Mammoths maintained a double-digit advantage throughout the second half. Valdez extended the margin to 22 at 51-29 with a jumper at the 2:28 mark in the third, and the lead grew to as many as 24 on two occasions during the fourth. After Ashton canned a 3-pointer with 2:30 left, the visitors responded with a layup on their next possession and stayed ahead by more than 20 the rest of the way.

Valdez and Fox each scored a team-leading 16 points and grabbed four rebounds to pace Amherst (21-3, NESCAC 8-2). Shipley netted 15 points, and Gabrielle Zaffiro finished the game with four steals.

Connecticut College (7-17, NESCAC 2-8), which recognized its five seniors prior to the game and had them all start, got a nine-point, seven-rebound effort from Coulverson. Gulbin scored a team-leading 11 points, while senior Dana Muckstadt (Dover, Mass.) finished the game with eight points and six rebounds. Muckstadt also finished her career ranked fourth on the program's all-time list for blocked shots with 95.

The Camels graduate five seniors and are slated to return 10 letterwinners next season.
