Comeback Effort By Volleyball Falls Short In Five-Set Match Against Western Connecticut State

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Despite coming back from a set down twice, the Connecticut College volleyball team came up just short and fell to Western Connecticut State by a 3-2 decision on Wednesday evening. The Colonials outlasted the Camels by set scores of 27-25, 25-27, 25-18, 19-25, and 15-7.

Connecticut College started the game on a roll and burst out to a 17-7 advantage in the opening set. However, after a kill by sophomore Emma Wheeler (Meredith, N.H.) made it 20-9, the Colonials stormed back and scored seven unanswered with Emma Mangold serving. Trailing 24-21, the visitors completed the improbable rally by scoring four straight points and then getting back-to-back kills from Victoria Alomar and Victoria Korzan.

The second set featured 11 ties and six lead changes, but this time, the Camels prevailed. Down 24-21, a service error by Olivia Monteleone gave the hosts an extra life that they capitalized on. Wheeler broke a 25-25 deadlock with a kill, and freshman Katherine Randall clinched the set by dropping an ace.

After dropping the third set, Connecticut College came back again to force a fifth and deciding frame. Randall finished a pass from sophomore setter Natasha Shrivastava (San Diego, Calif.) to break an 8-8 tie, and the Camels never trailed again. Senior Avery Light (Sudbury, Mass.) ended the frame with a kill.

Western Connecticut State (10-5), however, rattled off five straight points to seize the momentum in the fifth set and never looked back. A Camel service error gave the visitors a 10-3 advantage which would be more than enough insurance to earn their 10th victory of the season.

Victoria Korzan and Rory McMaster each recorded a double-double to lead the way for Western Connecticut State. Korzan had 13 kills and 22 digs, while McMaster finished with 47 assists and 12 digs. Libero Skylar Kellan racked up five aces to go along with 16 digs, and Abbi Debes ended the game with 11 kills and four blocks.

Shrivastava contributed a double-double with 41 assists and 10 digs to pace Connecticut College. She also posted four kills and three blocks. Randall also notched a double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs, and Wheeler recorded 16 kills. Freshman Julia Dailey (Charlottesville, Va.) led the team in digs with 21.

Connecticut College (4-8) resumes NESCAC action on the road this weekend and will next travel to face Hamilton on Friday evening at 7 p.m.
