Volleyball Remains In Contention For Postseason Berth Despite Three-Set Setback At Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Connecticut College volleyball team fell to Williams College by a 3-0 decision at Chandler Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. Set scores were 25-15, 25-18, and 25-16.

After the Camels grabbed an early 2-1 lead, the Ephs scored four straight and remained ahead for the remainder of the opening set. Lauren Kauppila and Olivia Hindy teamed up for a block to extend the lead to twin figures at 16-6, and the Ephs extended the margin to as many as 12 before eventually winning the frame handily.

Williams (12-2, NESCAC 6-2) jumped out to a 6-1 advantage in the second set, but the Camels fought back and came within one when freshman Lauren Carey (New York, N.Y.) set up junior Katie Gunderman (Oakland, Calif.) for one of her two kills to create an 8-7 score. Two consecutive attacking errors by the visitors gave the Ephs the momentum back, and the host school took the set by seven to remain in control.

Neither side led by more than two in the third set until Williams went on a 4-0 run to move ahead by an 11-6 score on an ace by Allison Frison. Even though the Camels came within three multiple times, the hosts never relinquished their lead en route to capturing the set by nine as well as the match.

Celia Adams led a balanced Williams attack with eight kills, while Tazmin Appiah had seven kills and a more efficient .400 attacking percentage to go along with three blocks. Kauppila registered a double-double with 26 assists and 12 digs, and Sidra Wohlwend tallied three aces.

Freshman Julia Dailey (Charlottesville, Va.) notched seven digs, two service aces and two assists for Connecticut College, which remained in contention for a NESCAC postseason berth despite the setback. Freshman Katherine Randall (Chicago, Ill.) had 10 digs and four kills, junior Christina Leduc (Mendon, Mass.) finished with five kills and eight digs, and sophomore Natasha Shrivastava (San Diego, Calif.) and Carey combined for 13 assists.

Connecticut College (5-9, NESCAC 2-7) will next play four straight non-conference games beginning with a visit to Coast Guard on Thursday evening at 6 p.m.
