MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Connecticut College field hockey team was unable to take down the Wesleyan Cardinals in its final game of their season, falling by a score of 1-0 on a windy night at Smith Field.
Connecticut College dominated possession in the first quarter, leading to their first-quarter advantage in penalty corners 5-1 which were all taken by sophomore
Sydney Cresta (Swampscott, Mass). Senior goalie
Jackie Mountford (New London, N.H.) preserved the scoreless first-quarter tie, cutting off and making a kick save on a Wesleyan breakaway attempt with just about thirty seconds left to go.
There were fewer total scoring opportunities in the second quarter, with neither team able to control possession for enough time to set up a threatening attack. Mountford had her number called again, this time falling on the ball to make the initial save, and then having her teammate, freshman,
Tatum Courtmanche (Madison, Conn) knock it out of the zone. The first half ended with Connecticut College leading in corners 6-4, but trailing in shots, 5-3, and shots on goal, 4-2.
Wesleyan (7-8, NESCAC 3-7) struck first several minutes into the third quarter. Hannah Curtis received the Cardinals inbounds corner pass and revved up to shoot an airborne shot, saved by the blocker of Mountford. Wesleyan's Annabel Cincotta was able to control, dribble in, and eventually shoot the rebound into the back of the Camel net for the 1-0 lead. The rest of the period went quietly with neither team registering any more shots on goal.
Connecticut College's defense was stellar throughout the game, but unfortunately, the Camels' offense was unable to produce in the fourth quarter, and the game ended with Wesleyan victorious by a score of 1-0.
Connecticut College's Mountford led Wesleyan's Kylie Nelson-Marois in saves by a margin of 6-2. Wesleyan finished leading in total shots, 11-3, shots on goal, 8-2, and corners, 14-8.
Connecticut College (2-13, NESCAC 0-10) graduates three seniors and is slated to return 20 letterwinners next season.
