NEW LONDON, Conn. – Junior
Alex Robles (Reston, Va.) set up a pair of goals, including the eventual game-winning marker scored by classmate
Steve Yeonas (McLean, Va., in leading the No. 25 Connecticut College men's soccer team to a 2-1 triumph over Williams in NESCAC Tournament quarterfinal match on a wet Saturday afternoon at Freeman Field.
With the victory, the top-seeded Camels will host the two semifinal round matches as well as the championship match next weekend for the first time in program history.
Williams controlled and had the first opportunities in the beginning of the match before the Camels started to counter. A big chance off a corner kick by freshman
Jack Kelesoglu (Westfield, N.J.) hit off the crossbar in the 24th minute, but he was able to still capitalize on another corner kick by heading home a cross taken by Robles from the right side. The Camels took a 1-0 advantage into the break.
In the second half, Connecticut College (13-3) dominated by outshooting the Ephs, 9-3, and doubled the margin in the 56th minute. An initial wide shot taken by sophomore
Jake Gehron was collected in the left corner of the box by Robles, and the junior fed a charging Yeonas a pass to the top of the box that was buried in the bottom right corner of the net after bouncing off an Eph defender.
The Ephs were able to slice the margin in half when they earned a penalty shot shortly after a free kick taken from just outside the box and about 30 yards away. The loose ball that was initially struck away by the Camel defense reached the foot of Nick Boardman, who fired a shot from the top of the box that accidentally went off the hand of a Camel. Will Felitto then capitalized to make it 2-1 with under 25 minutes remaining.
Williams (7-7-2) continued to threaten and earned a corner kick in the final minute of action with the goalie also out of the cage. However, the kick sent in was headed out by the Camel defense. Sophomore
Rye Jaran (Downingtown, Pa.) crossed midfield and came in on a breakaway with the final seconds ticking down. He sent a shot wide right of an unguarded net, and even though he misfired, time expired afterwards giving the Camels the win.
Junior goalie
Sam Maidenberg (South Orange, N.J.) made four saves in the winning effort for Connecticut College, which advanced to the semifinals for the first time since 2015 and won a quarterfinal match for the first time since 2014. Ben Diffley stopped seven shots for Williams in the losing effort.
Connecticut College will host the remaining three matches of the NESCAC Tournament which will include two semifinal matches on Saturday, Nov. 6 and the championship match on Sunday, Nov. 7 for the first time in program history.
After No. 3 Tufts and No. 4 Middlebury face off in the first semifinal at 11 a.m. Saturday morning, the Camels will next play seventh-seeded Colby in the second semifinal matchup later that afternoon at 1:30 p.m. The Mules advanced by bettering Amherst in penalty kicks.
