WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Sophomore
Natasha Shrivastava (San Diego, Calif.) registered her first collegiate double-double as the Connecticut College volleyball team rallied from behind and triumphed over Eastern Connecticut State, 3-2, in a marathon five-set match on Wednesday evening. Set scores were 25-12, 20-25, 23-25, 25-20, and 15-10.
With the score tied at 10-all in the fifth and final set, Shrivastava set up three different teammates for four kills to help the Camels end the frame and match with five unanswered. Wheeler, who got the visitors going with a kill and an assisted block early in the set, notched two kills down the stretch, including match point, to seal the victory.
Connecticut College (3-6) rolled to a 13-point victory in the opening set. The team jumped out to a 5-0 lead and extended the margin to twin figures at 12-2 on a Warrior attacking error by Bella Johnson. Two consecutive aces by freshman
Julia Dailey made it 23-10, and Leduc ended it by finishing a pass from Shrivastava.
The Warriors, however, fought back and captured the next two sets to seize the lead as well as the momentum. Abby Stern ended set two, and Meg Verizzi set up Alaetra Long for a smash to end the third.
Despite falling behind, the Camels rallied for the second time this season to force a deciding set and triumphed. Senior
Avery Light (Sudbury, Mass.) helped extend the match by registering kills for the final two Camel points in set four before completing the comeback with the help of Shrivastava quarterbacking a balanced offensive attack in the final frame.
Shrivastava's first collegiate double-double came by racking up 43 assists and 11 digs, which were both career bests for the Connecticut College sophomore. She also tallied another career mark with four kills. Leduc added a double-double with 16 kills, a career high, and 17 digs, while Dailey finished with 33 digs, seven assists, and three aces. Junior
Annie Wibbelsman had her best performance of the fall with seven kills and six blocks.
Eastern Connecticut State (9-5) was paced by Anna Barry and Long, who provided 19 kills apiece. Verizzi had 54 assists, and Abby Stern concluded the match with 22 digs.
