11/12/2021 8:49:00 PM

Box Score WALTHAM, Mass. – The Connecticut College women's basketball team dropped its season opener to Husson by a 64-47 score at the Brandeis Tip Off Tournament on Friday evening.

The entire first quarter was close with neither side leading by more than five. Claire Gulbin (Wilton, Conn.) made it a two-possession game for the first time when she sank a pair of free throws to make it 11-6 in favor of the Camels with a minute remaining in the opening quarter, but the Eagles scored the next four courtesy of Bailey Donovan to make it a one-point game after 10 minutes of play.

A three-pointer by Gulbin gave the Camels a 16-10 advantage with 7:54 on the clock in the second, and classmate Emily Tripp (Westport, Mass.) gave the team its largest lead, 22-14, by hitting shots from the stripe. However, the Eagles came back again and slashed the deficit to three by recess.

Husson (2-0), which has advanced to five straight NCAA Tournaments, took control of the third and did not allow its opponent to convert a field goal until junior Jaycie Rojik (Scituate, Mass.) made a layup with 6:35 on the clock. The advantage extended to twin figures at 42-31 on a putback by Cassie Urso before a free throw by Megan Peach closed out the scoring in the third with the Eagles leading by nine.

Another cold spell from the field by the Camels allowed Husson to take command and build up a 16-point advantage near the midway point of the fourth. Connecticut College came no closer than 12 the rest of the way and eventually fell by double digits.

Donovan was a difference maker for Husson, which advanced to play in the championship game against host Brandeis, as she finished the game with 25 points and 16 rebounds to go along with two blocks. Peach added six points and 10 boards, while Sydney Allen scored nine points and Vanessa Duarte dished out a game-high six assists.

Rojik scored a career-high 16 points to lead the way for Connecticut College (0-1). She also had three rebounds and a blocked shot. Tripp recorded seven points, 10 rebounds, and two assists, and Gulbin netted eight points in the first half.

The Camels will next play in the consolation game against Wheaton tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m.
