NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Connecticut College women's basketball team fell to Roger Williams on Wednesday by a score of 66-36.
Connecticut College, which was playing its first home game since hosting Amherst on Feb. 15, 2020, got off to a hot start and jumped out to an early 16-7 with four separate players making three-pointers in the first quarter. The Camels maintained their lead throughout much of the second quarter, but Roger Williams started to make up ground.
Caroline Elie led the Hawks comeback with eight points in the second quarter, including two momentum-shifting free throws in the waning seconds of the first half. A costly foul by the Camels away from the ball led to Elie draining both free throws and putting the Hawks up by a score of 29-28 at halftime.
Roger Williams continued its hot streak coming out of halftime, as it held the Camels to just two points in the third quarter while scoring 21 unanswered points and finishing the period up by a score of 54-30. The fourth quarter was much of the same with the Hawks outsourcing the Camels and eventually proving to be victorious by a final score of 66-36.
Roger Williams (1-0) was led by Karli Opalk, who totaled a game-high 12 points while adding five rebounds. Katie Galligan also contributed for the Hawks with nine points, eight rebounds, and three steals.
For the Camels, sophomore
Rebecca Oberman-Levine (Hamden, Conn.) and junior
Molly Cronin (Wellesley, Mass.) led the team with eight points apiece, while sophomore
Aislinn McMahon (Andover, Mass) totaled nine rebounds off the bench.
Connecticut College (1-2) will next host Emmanuel on Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m.
