WILLIMANTIC, Conn. - The Connecticut College men's basketball team fell to Eastern Connecticut State University by a score of 70-61 on Sunday evening. The Camels are now 1-3 on the season.
Eastern Connecticut State (4-3) got out to an early lead thanks to 11 first-half points from Quinton Lott, but Connecticut College kept the game close throughout the first half, heading into halftime trailing by nine points. With relatively similar shooting statistics throughout the first half, the major factor contributing to the lead for the Warriors was fouls and consequently free throws. Eastern converted on nine of their ten attempts from the line while the Camels managed to sink three of their five attempts. Sophomore
Jarron Flynn (Roslindale, Mass.) led the offensive charge for Connecticut College with nine points and added five rebounds, while Lott paced the Warriors with 11 points and five rebounds of his own.
The second half showcased Flynn's offensive talent, as he scored seven straight points to bring Connecticut College back and take the lead with just over 11 minutes to play. After a fast break dunk, a layup, and a free throw by Lott, the Warriors were able to regain the lead with nine minutes left in regulation. A fadeaway jumper from senior
Austin Lavitt (Rye Brook, N.Y.) gave the Camels the lead once again and the teams continued to go back and forth until Eastern pulled away right after the five-minute mark on the back of four straight made free throws by Lott to give the Warriors a five point lead.
After a made free throw by freshman
Ryan Banks (Woodley, England) with under a minute to go, the Camels made it a one-possession game. A layup by Lott with 30 seconds left in regulation extended the lead back to five points and eventually pull away through free throws, as Connecticut College attempted to get back into the game.
Flynn led the way for the Camels with 22 points to go along with six rebounds while Lavitt added 12 points of his own. For the Warriors, Lott paced the team with a game-high 30 points while adding eight rebounds. He also shot 8-of-11 from the floor and 14-of-16 from the line. Tyreice Woods contributed 12 points for the hosts.
The Warriors narrowly led the Camels in field goal percentage by a 42.9 to 40p percent margin despite the Camels being more efficient from deep, connecting on 23.8 percent of their shots from behind the arc compared to 21.7 percent for Eastern. Free throws leaned heavily in favor of the Warriors, as the Camels struggled from the line all game, connecting on only eight of their 14 free throws while Eastern Connecticut State connected on 23 of their 27 attempts from the line.
Both teams totaled 33 rebounds while Eastern dominated the Camels in assists by a total of 18-7. Connecticut College turned the ball over 13 times compared to 12 for Eastern Connecticut State.
