Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Women's Ice Hockey Downs Manhattanville, 3-1, For First Win Of The Season

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Junior Camille Phelan (Medfield, Mass.) set up two goals and three players found the back of the net as the Connecticut College women's ice hockey team earned a 3-1 victory over Manhattanville on Sunday afternoon at Dayton Arena.

Connecticut College scored the first two goals of the game by crashing the net and potting rebounds. Late in the first period, a forechecking Phelan stole the puck away in the Valiant defensive zone and fired a shot that was saved by Franny Gerardi. Sophomore Casey Godfrey (Redondo Beach, Calif.) then got to the rebound first and punched it home by diving forward through a dogpile of players at the 15:25 mark of the opening period.

The Camels doubled their lead in the second period in similar fashion. Senior captain Kaaren Liston (Houghton, Mich.) won a battle for the puck along the boards in the neutral zone and found Phelan, who blitzed through the defense and rifled a shot from the left side that was stopped by Gerardi with her left pad. With the play still alive, freshman Miyu Miyazaki (Chiba, Japan) didn't let up and poked the bouncing puck into the net by also diving forward for her second career goal in as many games.

Manhattanville (5-3-1) was able to slice the deficit in half when Virginia Birnie barely got the puck through the legs of goalie Carly Denora (Verona, N.J.) on a transition play which first saw Kerry Carr chase down a loose puck, but that was as close as the visitors would come with their very limited chances throughout the game.

With a delayed penalty being called against the Valiants, senior Natalie Witkowski (Cheshire, Conn.) finished a one-timed pass from freshman Kiley Smith (Marion, Mass.) at the 16:46 mark of the second to give the Camels all the insurance they would need to come away with the victory.

Denora earned the win by only having to make seven saves for Connecticut College, which outshot its opponent by a lopsided 49-8 margin. Gerardi made 46 stops in the losing effort.

Connecticut College (1-3) will play its third home game in four days when it next hosts Trinity in a return to NESCAC action on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.
