NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's basketball team was defeated by Springfield College by a score of 49-37 on Saturday afternoon at the Charles B. Luce Fieldhouse.
The game stayed pretty even through the first quarter with Connecticut College playing solid defense and securing several steals. The game continued as an even matchup through the beginning of the second quarter. The Camels kept their defensive pressure, holding Springfield to 14 points in the quarter.
Senior
Audrey Shaev (Scarsdale, N.Y.) made a three-pointer to keep the Camels in the game, and junior
Jaycie Rojik (Scituate, Mass.) had excellent drives to the basket. However, Springfield pulled ahead, ending the quarter ahead by a score of 25-18, and the Camels were unable to close the gap for the remainder of the game.
In the third quarter, the Pride held Connecticut College to only five points while scoring 15 themselves. The hosts went only 2-of-11 from the field and were unable to find offensive rhythm and break Springfield's effective full court press.
The Camels were able to gain some momentum in the fourth quarter and outscored their opponents 14-9, but it wasn't enough to narrow the deficit. Junior
Molly Cronin (Wellesley, Mass.) was able to drain two three-pointers and two free throws to contribute to the Camels' fourth quarter scoring efforts. Sam Hourihan was unable to be stopped, scoring six points in the fourth quarter alone to eventually secure the win for Springfield by 12.
Springfield College (10-0) was led by Hourihan, who totaled 24 points and 14 rebounds. Rojik and Cronin both had 12 points for the Camels, and Rebecca Oberlin-Levine (Hamden, Conn.) also contributed six rebounds.
Connecticut College (2-8) will head to Mitchell College on Monday evening for a 6 p.m. matchup and its last game before final exams.
