Women’s Ice Hockey Downs SUNY Potsdam, 3-0, In Consolation Game Of Spartan Invitational

By Sam Maidenberg '23

RUTLAND, Vt. – After suffering a loss in a shootout yesterday in a game against Castleton to decide who would advance to the finals of the Spartan Invitational, the Connecticut College women's ice hockey team bounced back with a commanding 3-0 win in Saturday's third-place game against SUNY Potsdam.

With three goals in the first period, the Camels took a commanding lead and never looked back, cruising to a victory and notching their first clean sheet of the season.

Sydney Jones (Lucas, Texas) opened up the scoring just two and a half minutes into the game, which was quickly doubled by Casey Godfrey (Geneva, Ill.). Finishing off a dominant opening period, Melissa Alexander (Bellingham, Mass.) tallied an insurance marker for the Camels, who scored three goals in the opening 12 minutes of play. The goals were the first of the season for all three of them.

After racing out to an early lead, the Camels continued to pile on the pressure, despite not being able to add to their three-goal advantage. With 59 shots, compared to just 33 from Potsdam (3-8-1), Conn put together a complete performance, as their early onslaught proved enough to win them the game.

Abby Wieczorek (Winnetka, Ill.) was awarded her first clean sheet of the season by  turning away 16 shots in a rather comfortable performance by Conn. Potsdam's Hannah Barrett was charged with the loss after making eight saves and surrendering all three goals in the opening period.

Connecticut College (3-4-2), which finished in third place in the Spartan Invitational, will next move on to face Trinity in an in-state NESCAC matchup on Tuesday, Jan. 4 at 7 p.m.
