SALEM, Mass. – The Connecticut College men's ice hockey team fell to the Salem State Vikings by a score of 3-1 in a Tuesday evening matchup on the road.
Salem State (3-7) opened things up early with a Richard Coyle pass across the center ice. Eammon Miller received and shot the pass in one motion for the early one-timer goal and 1-0 lead, about a minute into the first period.
Five minutes into the second period, with Salem State on the powerplay, Connecticut College (1-4) did a good job breaking up the initial Viking charge into the Camel zone. Salem State, however, recovered the puck in the Camel zone. When all attention was being paid to puck handler Coyle, his teammate, Erik Larsson was able to sneak unnoticed for positioning right outside the Camel net. Coyle, thinking to pass rather than shoot from about 20 feet out, found his teammate Larsson on the doorstep for the tap in goal and 2-0 lead.
With Connecticut College on the power play following a tripping call on Salem State's Oscar Richardson roughly two minutes into the third period, Connecticut College possessed the puck in Salem State's zone. Defenseman
Devan Newhook (St. John's, Newfoundland), puck handling, fired a pass to his partner
Colin McCabe (Pembroke, Mass). McCabe, with time, found an open
Anthony Quatieri (Peabody, Mass.), just below the opposite side faceoff circle for a favorable angle and the one-time goal, tightening the score at 2-1.
Despite Connecticut College's resurgence and outpacing their opponent 25-18 in shots, and only 10 minutes in penalty minutes to their opponent Salem State's 41, Salem State would score once more on an empty-net goal and earn the win by a final score of 3-1.
Connecticut College goaltender Michael McHale (Needham, Mass) made 16 saves to his opponent Joona Sato-Hunsula's 24.
Connecticut College will next host the Bowdoin Polar Bears on Friday at 7 p.m. at home at Dayton Arena.
