NEW LONDON, Conn. - Junior assistant captain
Camille Phelan scored the eventual game-deciding goal at the 7:21 mark of the third period to help lift the Connecticut College women's ice hockey team to a 3-2 victory over UMass Boston on Tuesday evening at Dayton Arena.
Connecticut College got on the board first by capitalizing on its first power play opportunity when
Kiley Smith buried a shot past a shielded Victoria Kennedy from the left point at the 9:39 mark with the penalty about to expire. The Camels, who outshot their opponent by a 20-4 margin in the first period, then doubled their lead in the second when Cecily Hartzel notched her first career goal and point at 5:12.
Despite continuing to be significantly outshot by the hosts, UMass Boston (4-6) rallied back and tied the score at 2-2 by getting a pair of scores less than six minutes apart. Kelsey Ryan put the Beacons on the board before Katie Wilbert tied it with 7:45 left to play.
However, Connecticut College was able to regain the lead and keep it the rest of the way on a play primarily started by
Sydney Jones. The senior skated up the ice, stopped along the left boards to draw defenders, and found
Morgan Bronstein who kept the play alive. Bronstein then sent a short pass to Phelan, who rocketed a shot in past Kennedy from the top of the slot. The Beacons, who pulled Kennedy with less than two minutes to play, could not score another equalizer, allowing the Camels to hold on for the-goal win.
Junior
Abby Wieczorek (Winnetka, Ill.) picked up the victory by only needing to make 13 saves for Connecticut College, which outshot its opponent each period and by a 49-15 margin overall. Kennedy of UMass Boston did all she could by making 46 stops in the losing effort.
Connecticut College (2-4) will next trek to Rutland, Vt. to compete in a tournament being hosted by Castleton. The Camels will begin weekend action against the host Spartans on Friday at 4 p.m.
