Women’s Basketball Concludes First Weekend of Play With Loss At Babson

BABSON PARK, Mass. – The Connecticut College women's basketball team fell to Babson by a 72-44 score to wrap up a two-game series on the road at Staake Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon.

Junior Emily Tripp (Westport, Mass.) scored on the Camels' opening possession, but the Beavers were able to speed ahead by not allowing the visitors to convert a field goal for nearly a six-minute stretch. After getting off to a cold shooting start themselves, the hosts went on an 11-1 run to take a lead they would never relinquish. Kelly Walsh made a pair of free throws and a 3-pointer to get Babson going, and Samantha Smith made a layup to give the Beavers an 18-5 advantage through one quarter.

Connecticut College (0-2) was more competitive in the second and was only outscored by five during the 10-minute frame. Tripp once again opened the scoring by finishing a pass from classmate Claire Gulbin (Wilton, Conn.), and sophomore Molly Cronin (Wellesley, Mass.) canned a 3-pointer to pull the Camels back within single digits less than one minute into the quarter. Jade Perry, however, converted a jumper on the Beavers' next possession to make it 20-10, and the Beavers would take a commanding 40-22 lead into the break.

The Camels got off to a fast start in the second half, as Gulbin stole the ball away and found junior Jenna Whelan (Bernardsville N.J.) for a layup on the very first play. Cronin brought the margin down to 15 by putting back her own miss to make it 45-30 with 7:16 on the clock, but that was as close as the visitors would come despite continuing to play the Beavers evenly in the stanza. Babson, which led by 20 at the end of the third, extended their lead to as many as 30 in the fourth quarter before eventually coming away with the 28-point win.

Babson (8-0) was led by Nicole Hiller, who recorded a double-double for the second straight game against the Camels with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Walsh led four Beavers in twin figures with 15 points and also finished with five assists to go along with three steals. Megan Bauman also had a strong performance, posting 14 points and dishing out four assists.

Sophomore Jaycie Rojik (Scituate, Mass.) paced Connecticut College (0-2) by contributing nine points and seven rebounds, which were both team highs. Gulbin finished with eight points and led the Camels with five assists and three steals, while Tripp and Whelan added six points apiece.
