Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Women’s Ice Hockey Skates Past Utica, 5-2, On Senior Day

NEW LONDON, Conn.Mairi Anthony (Stoneham, Mass.), Erin Dillon (Hazlet, N.J.), and Caitlyn Wilkin (Barre, Vt.) all found the back of the net on their Senior Day in leading the Connecticut College women's ice hockey team to a 5-2 victory over Utica at Dayton Arena on Sunday afternoon.

The Camels, who vaulted up to No. 1 in the national pairwise rankings following the victory, scored their first goal just 1:28 into the game and never looked back. Sophomore Melanie Conca (Nutley, N.J.) gained possession behind the left side of the net and sent a dangerous puck through a sea of players, and junior Melissa Alexander (Bellingham, Mass.) was able to send it home.

Utica (6-6) was able to tie it when Hailey Modlin capitalized on a failed clear attempt by the Camels at 13:12, but the hosts had an answer before the first intermission. Senior Caitlyn Wilkin (Barre, Vt.) got the play started by sending the puck up the ice along the left boards to classmate Erin Dillon (Hazlet, N.J.), and Dillon chipped another pass off the boards to a driving Phelan who finished after driving in uncontested from the left side. The Camels carried a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.

Connecticut College (4-0) doubled its lead early in the second period on another big effort from Wilkin. The senior stole the puck in the neutral zone, sent a hard shot on target from the slot that was initially saved, and she then potted her own rebound to make it 3-1 at the 2:13 mark.

Wilkin continued to shine as the game progressed and also factored into the team's fourth goal with the team on a power play. The senior sent an attempt that made its way around the boards to Dillon, and the senior fired home an uncontested slapshot from the top of the left circle. Wilkin was credited with an assist on the play for her career-best third point of the contest.

Even though Utica trimmed the deficit down to two on a play that was started by goaltender Savannah Gutierrez, the Camels were able to end the game on a high note with one more goal that came off the stick of another senior. With the hosts on another power play, freshman Abby Munger (Tampa, Fla.) sent a cross ice pass to a racing Anthony, who beat Gutierrez with a one timer from just outside the crease at 8:32.

Junior Carly Denora (Verona, N.J.) picked up the victory between the posts by making 21 saves for Connecticut College, while Utica's Gutierrez turned aside 30 shots.
