NEW LONDON, Conn. – Sophomore
Melanie Conca (Nutley, N.J.) scored a golden goal in the second minute of overtime to lift the Connecticut College women's ice hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Trinity in an exhibition matchup on Sunday afternoon at Dayton Arena.
Connecticut College, which trailed by a goal for most of the game, outshot the Bantams 14-7 during a scoreless second and eventually netted the equalizer shortly after going on their fifth power play of the game with time in regulation winding down. Senior
Mairi Anthony (Stoneham, Mass.) won a faceoff from the left dot and the puck found
Erin Dillon (Hazlet, N.J.), who sent a pass back to freshman
Abby Munger (Tampa, Fla.) on the left point. Munger then passed it back to Dillon down low, and the senior buried a shot over the glove of goaltender Stephanie Garvis with 3:28 left in regulation.
The Camels earned an additional power play for the remainder of regulation and generated several scoring chances. However, they were unable to convert, and the teams headed to overtime.
Playing 3-on-3 in the extra session, Trinity earned a 2-on-1 opportunity with under four minutes left and had the play initially broken up by Alexander. After recovering and trying to reset the offense, Alexander intercepted a pass just inside the blue line which created a breakaway opportunity with Conca. Without any Bantam defenders to beat, Alexander skated in and found Conca at the last possible moment for a one timer on the right side that made its way inside the right post at the 1:47 mark of the frame.
Junior
Carly Denora (Verona, N.J.) picked up the victory by making 22 saves. Garvis suffered the loss despite making 33 saves for Trinity, which got its goal at the 18:32 mark in the first on a redirected shot off the stick of Stephanie Nevers.
The Camels ended the month of March with a 4-0 record in countable games before going unbeaten in a pair of exhibition contests against the Bantams this weekend. The Nutmeg rivals also played to a 1-1 overtime tie in Hartford yesterday afternoon.
