NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College Athletic Department is pleased to announce it has transformed an existing exercise studio into a new weight training room for its varsity student-athletes.
"This renovation allows our talented sports performance team to engage and develop our athletes in new and more robust ways than ever before," said
Josh Edmed, who serves as an Associate Director of Athletics and is one of the key individuals responsible for spearheading the project. "Our athletes are gaining access to enhanced opportunities with state-of-the-art equipment to continue their pursuit of competing at the highest levels of the NESCAC and across Division III."
The space encompasses 1,600 square feet and will allow up to 24 athletes to train together efficiently and effectively. The room contains Olympic lifting stations, kettlebells, dumbbells, medicine balls, resistance bands, TRX bands, plyometric boxes, and more.
"The renovation of this space allows the sports performance team to work with equipment and space that was not available to us before," said
Analisse Rios, who is the athletic department's nationally certified strength & conditioning specialist. "Teams will now be able to lift together [in their own space] to further develop their teamwork. At the same time, they will be motivating each other and themselves to increase their strength, mobility, agility, and overall athletic performance. This varsity weight room will be a place where athletes will achieve their fitness goals that will then transfer over to the field, court, ice, or water."
Having a space dedicated solely for varsity athletes to train will benefit the entire student body and the campus community, as it will free up the existing fitness center for them to utilize more on a regular basis.
"One of our top goals for our athletic strategic plan is to elevate the student-athlete experience by preparing our athletes for optimal performance" said
Mo White, Director of Athletics. "That requires creating a comprehensive strength & conditioning program and building a high-performance facility to support that program. The athletes are thrilled, and this project speaks to our commitment to elevating the student-athlete experience and our vision for competitive success."
