BEVERLY, Mass. – The Connecticut College field hockey team came up short in its season opener against Endicott by suffering a 2-0 setback on Tuesday evening at North Field.
Endicott (2-2) got on the scoreboard first in the 12th minute of action by capitalizing on what eventually became a third opportunity. Olivia Lampasona had a golden chance to score first, but Camel goalkeeper
Jackie Mountford (New London, N.H.) came out of the cage and stuffed the initial attempt. Mountford also kicked away an ensuing shot by Sydney Poulin, and the Camels appeared to have dodged a bullet. However, Poulin collected her own miss on the right corner and found Jenna Seibold for a back door strike which gave the Gulls the lead.
After two failed penalty corners by the Camels at the start of the second quarter, the hosts continued to pressure Mountford throughout the frame. While Mountford came up with several more big stops, the Gulls earned themselves a penalty stroke in the waning minutes and had Abby Carter convert to double the margin heading into recess.
The Camels had their chances in the second half and most notably almost got on the board in the opening minutes of the fourth. Sophomore
Sydney Cresta (Swampscott, Mass.) had several looks early, but one shot was blocked, another was stopped by Taylor Farrin, and a rebound attempt was thwarted by Meghan Lehouiller's defensive save.
Farrin picked up the shutout victory between the posts by making three saves for Endicott, which outshot the Camels by a 22-7 margin and had a 9-6 advantage in penalty corners. Mountford, who made a valiant effort by stopping nine Gull shots, was charged with the setback.
Connecticut College (0-1) will next begin NESCAC action when it visits Bates on Saturday at noon.
