NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Connecticut College men's water polo team dropped a road match to Iona by a 14-6 decision at Hynes Pool on Friday evening.
Iona (2-5), which competes at the NCAA Division I level, scored the first six goals and never looked back. Despite trailing 5-0 after the first quarter, the Camels pulled within four on a strike by junior
Sam Guy (Portland, Ore.) which made it 6-2 at the midway point of the second. However, another three consecutive goals by the Gaels would prove to be too much to overcome.
Senior
Mike Gertsik (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and junior
Christian Jacobsen (North Palm Beach, Fla.) paced the Camel offense with two goals apiece. On the defensive end, freshman
Siaki Nelson (Montgomery, Texas), sophomore
Alex Turnquest (Nassau, Bahamas), and Jacobsen combined for five saves between the posts.
Lester Machado led Iona with four goals and two assists, while goalies Kyle Laufenberg and Diego Gomez each made six stops apiece.
Connecticut College (0-2) will resume action when it travels to face the Gaels again along with Fordham on Saturday, Oct. 2. Game times are slated to be at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
