Men’s Soccer Rebounds With 3-1 Triumph Over Hamilton

By Claire Gulbin '22

CLINTON, New York – Junior Alex Robles (Reston, Va.) scored two goals in leading the Connecticut College men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Hamilton on Sunday afternoon.

The majority of the first half was controlled by the Camels as they outshot the Continentals, 14-2. Robles put the visitors on the board in the 24th minute after sophomore Alessandro Horvath Diano (New Haven, Conn.) blocked a clear attempt by a Continental defender near the edge of the 18-yard box. The ball landed in front of Robles, who punched the ball into the far right corner of the net.

The second goal of the game came from sophomore Jake Gehron (Kittery, Maine) in the 38th minute when junior Augie Djerdjaj (Mahopac, N.Y.) delivered a lead pass that Gehron was able to strike past the Hamilton goalkeeper to extend the Camels lead to 2-0.

Hamilton (2-4-1, NESCAC 0-4) held Connecticut College to fewer scoring opportunities in the second half, allowing only six shot attempts, but the continued offensive intensity from the Camels resulted in their third goal of the game. In the 58th minute, Robles scored his second goal of the match from another assist from Diano. Diano sent a corner kick to the back post where he found Robles, who knocked it in to put the Camels up 3-0.

The Continentals were able to get on the scoreboard late in the second half when Grant Zimmerman sent a low shot past goalkeeper Manoli Despines (Barrington, R.I.). After a steal at midfield, Simon Hoke connected with Zimmerman to earn the assist. The Continentals' late efforts to come back from the 3-0 deficit were unsuccessful, as the game ended with a final score of 3-1 favoring the Camels.

Connecticut College goalkeeper Sam Maidenberg (South Orange, N.J.) finished the game allowing no goals and registering one save before being substituted by Despines late in the second half. Hamilton College goalkeeper Ben Ziegler started the game and registered five saves in the loss before being relieved by Kai Haesslein, who stopped one shot in the match.

Connecticut College (4-2, NESCAC 3-1) will next face off against the Middlebury College Panthers next Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at home.
