Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – Junior
Katie Gunderman (Oakland, Calif.) and freshman
Lauren Carey (New York, N.Y.) combined for 15 kills and only one error in leading the Connecticut College volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of Mitchell on Tuesday evening. Set scores were 25-20, 25-15, and 25-15.
Connecticut College (2-4) built up a 5-2 advantage in the first set and never trailed again. Even though the Mariners tied the score up twice, the Camels never surrendered the lead. A kill by sophomore
Emma Wheeler (Meredith, N.H.) made it 24-17, and Carey clinched the set with a kill of her own.
The Camels were more dominant in the second set and rolled to a 10-point win thanks in large part to hitting at a .462 clip and committing only two errors. Freshman
Amanda Kreidler (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) notched a kill to help the team build up a quick 7-2 advantage, and the visitors were only challenged once the rest of the way. After Molly Steel-Miller registered a kill to create a 15-13 score, the Camels rattled off five straight points and ended the frame on a 10-2 run.
Mitchell (3-8) fought back and did not go away quietly in the third and final set. Three straight kills by different players gave the hosts a 5-4 edge, and the remainder of the frame featured five ties before the Camels started to pull away. A 4-0 run sparked by consecutive kills from Carey gave the visitors a 12-9 advantage and the lead for good, and a streak of six unanswered put the game out of reach. Connecticut College did not commit an attacking error in the frame and sealed their second victory of the season on a Mariner service error.
Gunderman hit at a .583 clip by recording eight kills on 12 swings and only committing one error for Connecticut College, which won for the second time in its last three games. She also tallied two blocks. Carey had 31 assists, seven kills, six digs, and two blocks as well, while freshman
Katherine Randall (Chicago, Ill.) finished with eight kills, seven digs, and four aces.
Olivia DeLoach led Mitchell with eight kills and six digs, and setter Claire Binfield posted 18 assists to go along with seven digs. Stephanie Costabile contributed 12 digs.
Connecticut College will resume NESCAC action this weekend when it hosts Bates for its long-awaited home opener on Friday at 7 p.m.
