CLINTON, N.Y. – Sophomore
Sean Dynan (Reading, Mass.) made more than 40 saves in his second start of the season in leading the Connecticut College men's ice hockey team to a 2-1 triumph over Hamilton on Tuesday afternoon.
The Camels got on the board midway through the first period and never looked back. Following an icing call,
Seth Stadheim (Lyme, N.H.) won the ensuing faceoff from the left dot and the puck found the stick of
John Harrington (Braintree, Mass.). The freshman fired a shot that was initially saved by Sean Storr, but he got it back and potted his own rebound to make it 1-0 at 11:20.
In the second period, the Camels were able to double their lead despite playing shorthanded at the time. Senior captain
Kyle Shero (Westwood, Mass.) deflected a cross ice pass between two Continental defenders and went in all alone for the score at the 14:06 mark.
After capitalizing on a defensive lapse by the hosts and taking a 2-0 advantage into the second intermission, the Camels nearly added insurance in the seventh minute of the third period when freshman
Devan Newhook (St. John's, Newfoundland) and Stadheim had a 2-on-1 breakaway. However, both of their shots were turned away by Storr.
Shortly afterwards, Hamilton (5-3, NESCAC 4-2) then turned the tide by cashing in on an extended offensive possession when Grisha Gotovets deflected in an initial shot by Sean Thompson from the right corner at the midway point of the frame. The marker sliced the Camel lead in half and gave the hosts life.
The Continentals, who outshot the Camels by a 43-24 margin, continued to pepper Dynan with shots and pulled Storr with about 1:40 left. However, it was to no avail. A good look by Nick Rutigliano to tie the match in the waning seconds following a Hamilton faceoff win was off target, and the Camels survived to post their first NESCAC win of the season.
Dynan finished the game with a career-best 42 saves to earn the win for the Camels, while Hamilton's Storr turned away 22 shots in the loss.
Connecticut College (2-7, NESCAC 1-5) will continue a five-game road trip when it visits Trinity on Friday evening at 7 p.m.
