Men's Hockey Wins Overtime Thriller Against Middlebury

1/30/2022 8:13:00 PM

Box Score MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - Paul Capozzi (Lake Forest, Ill.) scored the winning goal with 22 seconds left in overtime, lifting Connecticut College men's ice hockey over Middlebury 3-2 on Sunday afternoon.

The Camels (5-8-1, 4-6-0) traveled to Middlebury and picked up their first win against the Panthers since 2017. In addition to Capozzi, Lukas Uhler (Upland, Calif.) and Anthony Quatieri (Peabody, Mass.) scored goals for the away team.

In a tightly contested game, Middlebury (2-10-2, 1-9-1) struck first just under three minutes into the game, when EMack Bentley received a pass off the face-off and immediately shot the puck, finding the top left corner of the net. Connecticut College would answer on a five-on-three Camels power play. After a battle in front of the Middlebury net, Uhler came up with the puck and was able to force it in, tying the score at one. In a physical first period, Camels forward Younghoon Choi (Seoul, South Korea) delivered a huge hit that forced a Middlebury forward over the boards into visiting bench.

Connecticut College claimed the 2-1 lead in the opening moments of the second period, courtesy of a wrist shot taken by forward Quatieri as he evaded defenders skating back towards his own blue line. The lead would hold through the end of the period, thanks to tight defensive play and a few outstanding saves by goaltender Mike McHale (Needham, Mass.)

Entering the third period, with the Panthers down one score, Middlebury's Jin Lee was able to get a shot on net and by McHale to tie the game at two. Despite three power play opportunities, including a five-minute major against the Panthers, the Camels were unable to capitalize and the game would head to overtime.

Early in the extra period, Middlebury had a prime opportunity when forward Chris Garbe had a bid from the slot. But the puck hit the left pipe and ricocheted away.

It would be the Camels who would have the last opportunity. In the waning moments of overtime, Capozzi was able to beat two Panthers defenders and Middlebury goalie Jake Horoho for the walk-off winner.

The Panthers recorded 29 shots on goal compared to the Camels 22. McHale earned his second win of the season and finished the game with 27 saves.

Connecticut College will continue its NESCAC schedule with a game against Colby at Dayton Arena on Tuesday, February 1 at 5:30 p.m.
