10/16/2022 3:51:00 PM

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Connecticut College men's water polo team lost a pair of matches over the weekend at the Harvard Invitational.

The Camels fell by a 21-10 final to Salem University on Saturday morning and dropped a 17-4 decision to Gannon University on Sunday. Christian Jacobsen (North Palm Beach, Fla.) paced Conn with five goals in the two matches.

Conn College (1-8 overall) will next compete at the CWPA Division III Eastern Championship on October 22-23. The sixth-seeded Camels will face third-seeded Augustana College in the opening round on Saturday at 10:20 a.m.

Game 1 – Salem 21, Conn College 10

The two sides combined for 13 goals in a high-scoring opening quarter. Salem jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before Jacobsen put the Camels on the scoreboard. Conn was forced to play catch up for the rest of the stanza—goals by Siaki Nelson (Montgomery, Texas) and Jacobsen cut the deficit to one at three different points—but couldn't make up the difference.

Late in the first, the Tigers used three straight goals to open up an 8-4 lead. Chase Fichtner (New Canaan, Conn.) responded with a tally with 33 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to three heading into the second period. Despite another goal from Fichtner, Salem outscored Conn 4-1 in the second quarter and led 12-6 at halftime.

Sam Guy (Portland, Ore.) and Jacobsen added goals in the second half while Fichtner completed his hat trick. The Camels trailed 17-10 heading into the final period but were held scoreless over the final 8:00.

Game 2 – Gannon 17, Conn College 4

Gannon netted the first seven goals of the game to seize control in the first quarter. Grant Archer (Miami, Fla.) finally broke through for the Camels in the opening minutes of the second, but the Golden Knights extended the lead to 11-1 by intermission.

Jack Haddad (Springfield, Mass.) kicked off the scoring in the third period, and Jacobsen added a pair of goals as the Camels closed the gap to 12-4. However, Gannon didn't allow a goal over the final 13:13 en route to the victory.
