Men's Soccer Draws With Amherst 1-1

AMHERST, Mass. - Sophomore Jack Kelesoglu (Westfield, N.J.) scored in the 81st minute to force a 1-1 draw with No. 16 Amherst on Wednesday afternoon at Hitchcock Field.

In a rematch of the 2021 NCAA Championship game, the two teams battled to move up the conference standings. Coming into the matchup, the Mammoths were in the fifth slot, while the Camels entered the game in ninth place.

Two strong defensive teams were on display early on in the contest with both squads allowing less than one goal per game on average. Throughout the first half, there were only three shots on goal, all that were snuffed out by Camels' keeper Peter Silvester (Smiths Parish, Bermuda).

The Mammoths (7-1-5 overall, 2-1-5 NESCAC) were able to break through on the scoreboard in the 30th minute when forward Ada Okorogheye was tripped up in the box by defender Marco Cerezo (Malaga, Spain). Although it appeared that Cerezo may have made contact with the ball first, Amherst was awarded with a penalty kick. The Mammoths elected for sophomore Ben Clark-Eden to take the attempt. Clark-Eden located the shot in the right side of the net, past the diving Silvester to give Amherst the 1-0 lead. The hosts would take the one-goal advantage into the break.

For the majority of the second half, the Camels' attempts to tie the score were thwarted by the Mammoths, who resorted to a primarily defensive scheme.

With time winding down on the game clock, Conn earned a free kick about 10 yards outside the Amherst penalty area. Alessandro Horvath Diano (New Haven, Conn.) lobbed the ball into the box where Mammoths' keeper Bernie White seemed to have a read on the kick. However, the ball slipped through White's hands and trickled toward the net. Kelesoglu located the loose ball and tapped it into the open goal to tie the score at one.

In the waning minutes, Amherst was able to locate two shots on net, but Silvester saved both attempts to keep the score even as time ran out.

Silvester stopped six shots overall, while White made one save for the Mammoths. The game was physical throughout with seven cards issued overall, including six from Amherst.

Wednesday's contest marked the third time in the last five matchups that the two teams have earned a draw against each other.

Connecticut College (6-4-3 overall, 2-4-2 NESCAC) will head home to host Bates on Saturday Oct. 22 at 2:00 p.m. on Freeman Field.
