NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- The Connecticut College men's water polo team suffered a 16-4 setback to Iona University on Sunday afternoon at Hynes Pool.
The Camels fell behind 5-1 in the opening quarter and never recovered. Fourteen different players scored a goal for Iona, with Sole Fratila and Timothy Bergamini leading the way with two apiece.
Iona took control behind three straight scores to open the contest. After
Christian Jacobsen (North Palm Beach, Fla.) supplied Conn's first goal with 3:38 remaining in the first quarter, the Gaels responded with five more goals before the halftime whistle to lead 8-1 at the break.
Chase Fichtner (New Canaan, Conn.) scored a minute into the second half to pull Conn to within six, the first of three second-half goals for the Camels. The final two came off the power play in the fourth quarter courtesy of
Siaki Nelson (Montgomery, Texas) and
Carson Neidert (West Palm Beach, Fla.).
Cully MacPherson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and
Sebastian Parilov (Brooklyn, N.Y.) split time in goal for the Camels. MacPherson finished with two saves and three steals while Parilov made five stops and one swipe.
Conn College will next host MIT and Harvard University on Saturday, October 8 at 10 a.m. and 1:45 p.m.
