Field Hockey Trumps Wesleyan in Season Finale

McGann nets four goals to lead the offensive explosion

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College field hockey team wrapped up the 2022 season with a 7-4 victory over Wesleyan University on Tuesday evening in NESCAC action at Silfen Field.

Conn outscored Wesleyan 4-1 in the second half en route to its second conference win of the season. Bridget McGann (West Hartford, Conn.) tallied four goals and Bridget Mason (East Greenwich, R.I.) added two scores and an assist as the Camels also notched their highest single game goal total since 2005.

Sadie Abuhaidar (Park City, Utah) was solid in goal for Conn, contributing six saves while facing 20 shots. The sophomore got the starting nod for the fourth time this season and improved to 3-1 in the cage.

Diana Schwarz (Etna, N.H.) finished with two goals and an assist to pace Wesleyan (4-11 overall, 1-9 NESCAC).

The teams traded goals in the opening five minutes of the contest, giving an early indication that the game would be a high-scoring affair. Schwarz put the first goal on the scoreboard just over three minutes in, dribbling into the scoring circle before lifting a shot into the top of the cage from the right side.

Less than a minute later, McGann tied the score at 1-1 off a beautiful set piece on a short corner. The insertion went to Rowan Galanis (Ipswich, Mass.) on the wing, and she slapped a shot into the circle that was redirected by McGann for the finish.

Early in the second quarter, a spectacular defensive save by Kylee Quinn (Sandwich, Mass.) kept the game tied. However, on the following short corner, Schwarz was awarded a penalty stroke and converted to put the Cardinals back on top 2-1.

With 10 minutes to go in the half, Conn took its first lead behind goals by McGann and Kendall Arnold (Pawling, N.Y.). The Camels almost made it to the halftime intermission with the advantage, but Wesleyan earned five penalty corners in the final minute of the half and pushed in the game-tying goal courtesy of Annabel Cincotta (Lexington, Mass.).

Mason put the Camels on top for good with a pair of goals in the third quarter. She netted her first goal of the season just 1:34 into the half off a long feed through the middle of the field from Quinn. Five minutes later Mason added her second marker by cleaning up a loose ball in front of the goal.

McGann tacked on two more goals in the final quarter as Conn extended the lead to 7-3. The Cardinals added a late goal from Helen Dretchin (Circleville, N.Y.) but couldn't make up the difference.

McGann recorded her second hat trick of the season and finished her remarkable rookie season with 11 goals, the most by a Conn player since 2010. The 11 goals are also tied for sixth most all-time in program history for a single season.

Conn finished the season with an overall record of 5-10 (2-8 NESCAC). The Camels recorded their most wins since 2017 and picked up multiple NESCAC victories for the first time since 2016.
