NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Connecticut College women's volleyball team closed out the 2022 season with a 3-0 loss to No. 24 Tufts University on Friday night at Luce Field House.
The Jumbos, who improved to 17-5 overall and remained atop the NESCAC standings at 8-1, secured the victory by set scores of 25-13, 25-18 and 25-23. Jenelle Yarwood (Scottsdale, Ariz.) finished with a match-high 12 kills and added nine digs and two blocks to lead the visitors.
Katherine Randall (Chicago, Ill.) paced the Camels with nine kills and a match-high 13 digs.
Taylor Knott (Chapel Hill, N.C.) chipped in seven kills while
Zoe Watts (Chicago, Ill.) tacked on five.
Tufts opened the first set with five straight points and never trailed. The Jumbos later extended the margin on the serve of Zoe Gregory (Woodside, Calif.), who keyed a 9-0 run that included a pair of service aces. Yarwood made her presence felt early, supplying five kills in the set as Tufts went up 1-0 in the match.
The Camels kept it close in the second, but their 12 attack errors ultimately proved costly. Tufts led 16-15 before clinching the set with a 9-3 spurt, with Yarwood swinging for a pair of kills down the stretch.
Conn grabbed its first lead in the third in what proved to be the most competitive set of the night. The Camels put themselves in spot to extend the match after consecutive kills by Knott and Randall tied the score at 22-22. After Tori Goldin (Califon, N.J.) put the Jumbos back on top, Randall responded with another kill—her third of the set—to even things up once more. However, Tufts nabbed the next two points to finish off the match, with Emma Norman (Houston, Texas) providing the final kill.
Prior to the match, the Camels honored their five seniors in a special ceremony.
Katie Gunderman (Oakland, Calif.),
Christina Leduc (North Dennis, Mass.),
Nicolette Marino (Verona, N.J.),
Georgia Quesnelle (Marblehead, Mass.) and
Annie Wibbelsman (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) all got the starting nod in the final game of their careers. Wibbelsman led the group with three kills and four blocks in the contest.
Conn College finished the season with an overall record of 7-14 overall (1-9 NESCAC).
