Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Middlebury Edges Men's Soccer 1-0

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - The Connecticut College men's soccer team fell to No. 12 Middlebury 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at South Street Field.

In the sixth minute, Eujin Chae scored on an unlikely cross attempt from over 25 yards away on the near sideline. The ball sailed over the head of Camels' keeper Peter Silvester (Smiths Parish, Bermuda) and into the top right corner of the net.

Following the score, Conn took control offensively and controlled possession for the majority of the first half. The Camels nearly tied the score in the 28th minute when Jake Creus (Rye, N.Y.) took a through ball from teammate Steve Yeonas (McLean, Va.), past a Panthers defender. With only the goalie to beat, the left-footed attempt was snuffed out by Ryan Grady to keep the Camels off the scoreboard.

Conn once again nearly leveled the score on a shot attempt from Maurice Pigola (Gorlitz, Germany). But Grady was able to corral the accurate strike with another solid save.

One of the game's pivotal moments came near the end of the first half when Camels' defenseman Roman Dutkewych (Ellington, Conn.) was booked with a red card. As a result, Conn had to play the remainder of the game with only 10 players on the field.

Despite the disadvantage, the Camels remained aggressive in the second half. They continued to press forward and search for offensive opportunities. While down a man, the visitors attempted seven shots and the defense kept the Panthers off the scoreboard.

In the waning minutes, Matt Scoffone (Thornton, Pa.) took a shot inside the penalty box, but the attempt was saved by Grady, and the Panthers held on to earn the 1-0 victory.

The game was physical throughout, and several players on both sides earned cards. In addition to Dutkewych, Jack Kelesoglu (Westfield, N.J.) was booked with a yellow card. For the Panthers, five separate players were issued yellow cards.

Even with a man down for the entirety of the second half, the Camels equaled the Panthers in shots with 14. Silvester and Grady played evenly in goal, each recording five saves.

Connecticut College (5-3-2 overall, 2-3-1 NESCAC) concludes the weekend road series with a 1-1 record. The Camels will next host Babson on Oct. 12 at 7 p.m.
