BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Connecticut College men's water polo team dropped a 10-7 decision at Long Island University on Saturday afternoon at LIU Pool.
Six Camels scored a goal in the contest, with
Christian Jacobsen (North Palm Beach, Fla.) finding the back of the net twice in the second half for the visitors.
Conn looked good early, as Jacobsen clanged his first shot attempt off the crossbar and nearly put it past the LIU goalie. After getting a steal on the defensive end,
Sam Guy (Portland, Ore.) then swam up the pool and scored off a feed from Jack Haddad (Springfield, Mass.) for the game's first goal.
The Sharks evened the score less than two minutes later and took a 2-1 advantage in the final minute of the quarter. In the second period, Matthew Maischoss (Malibu, Calif.) provided the lone goal for Conn, which trailed 5-2 at the half.
The Camels initially made up some ground in the third quarter thanks to goals by Jacobsen and Chase Fichtner (New Canaan, Conn.), cutting the deficit to 5-4. However, the Sharks bounced back for two scores in the final 30 seconds of the stanza to extend the margin back to three.
After falling behind 8-4 at the start of the fourth, Conn scored three of the next four goals to stay in the hunt.
Grant Archer (Miami, Fla.) got things started with a marker with 4:17 left in the game, and less than a minute later Jacobsen added his second tally of the contest. Haddad later added a score that made it a 9-7 game with 1:34 left.
LIU tacked on an insurance goal with 60 seconds remaining, and the Camels ultimately ran out of time. Angelos Koutsogeorgas finished with four goals to pace the Sharks on the day.
All three Conn goalies saw action in the match. Brooklyn natives Cully MacPherson (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Sebastian Parilov (Brooklyn, N.Y.) split time in the first half, and Issac Merwin (Houston, Texas) saw playing time in the third quarter. Parilov returned to net in the fourth and provided several key stops to keep the Camels in contention down the stretch.
Conn College (3-13 overall) will wrap up the season at the New England Water Polo Championship on November 18-20 at Brown University.
