Men's Basketball Cruises Past Purchase

Camels allow fewest points since 2012-13 season

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's basketball team made its home debut in style on Tuesday night, cruising to a 78-36 victory over Purchase College at Luce Field House.

David Murray (Jackson Heights, N.Y.) led all scorers with a season-high 19 points and added nine rebounds in only 22 minutes of action as the Camels improved to 2-1 on the season. Cam Schainfeld (Newton, Mass.) and Andrew Hartel (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) also scored in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively, as the hosts shot 49 percent from the floor.

Conn trailed in the early minutes of the contest but took control behind a 16-1 run that yielded a 20-8 lead with 8:01 left in the half. Murray supplied four buckets during the stretch, and the Camels also did the job on the defensive end, holding Purchase without a field goal for 8:27.

Conn maintained the double-digit lead into the halftime intermission. Murray led all scorers with 15 points on 7-for-11 shooting at the break.

The Camels exploded for 47 points in the second half and shot 65 percent from the floor and 60 percent from beyond the arc. Conn pushed the lead to 20 by the 14:44 mark, 30 with 6:28 to go, and 40 with just over a minute remaining. The hosts also spread the wealth on offense as 10 players found the scoring column in the half.

Hartel, who netted eight of his 10 points in the second stanza, added nine rebounds and three blocks to his stat line. Ben Rice (Hanson, Mass.) also grabbed nine boards as Conn held a 49-41 edge on the glass.

The Camels limited Purchase (2-1 overall) to just 18 points in each half and 22-percent shooting for the game. The 36 points were the fewest allowed by Conn since the 2012-13 season.

Conn College returns to action at home against Roger Williams University on Saturday, November 19 at 2 p.m.
