Women's Ice Hockey Triumphs Over Wesleyan In Season Opener

NEW LONDON, Conn. – First year Casey Chesner (Great Falls, Va.) scored in her first collegiate game to lead the Connecticut College women's ice hockey team to a season-opening 2-0 win over Wesleyan on Friday night at Dayton Arena.

The Camels kicked off their 2022-23 campaign with a complete all-around effort . Goaltender Abby Wieczorek (Winnetka, Ill.) was outstanding between the pipes, stopping 25 shots, including 14 in the third period alone. Additionally, the Camels' penalty kill unit was a difference maker, stifling all seven of the Cardinals' power play opportunities.

Throughout the first period, the game was evenly matched with both teams searching for an offensive rhythm. Wesleyan and Conn each had eight shots on goal in the opening frame, but neither squad could find the back of the net.

Just 1:47 into the second period, the Camels were able to capitalize on the offensive end. As forward Miyu Miyazaki (Chiba, Japan) controlled the puck in the Wesleyan defensive zone, she banked a pass off the boards to Chesner. The first year skated toward the net from the right face-off circle and fired a wrister into the top corner of the goal and past Cardinals' goaltender Rei Halloran to give the Camels the 1-0 advantage.

The lead would hold heading into the third period. In the final frame, the Cardinals did all they could to even the score, but Wieczorek and the Camels' defense held strong throughout. The Cardinals attempted nine shots in the final five minutes of play, but were not able to find the equalizer.

With less than two minutes remaining, Wesleyan sent Halloran to the bench to utilize the extra attacker. Conn senior Melanie Conca (Nutley, N.J.) intercepted a pass in the Cardinals' offensive zone and scored on the empty net to seal the 2-0 victory for the Camels.

Part of Conn's success was due to the high percentage of face off wins throughout the game. The Camels won 36 of 51 total face offs. Miyazaki was particularly effective, winning 10 out of 11.

Connecticut College (1-0 overall, 1-0 NESCAC) will again host Wesleyan on Saturday, November 19 at 3 p.m.
