Carter, Love Earn All-America Status At NCAA Division III Championships

Connecticut College competes at nationals for first time since 2002

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Seniors Matt Carter (Manchester, Mass.) and Jeffrey Love (Union, N.J.) earned All-America status at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships to lead the Connecticut College men's cross country team to a 24th place finish at the event.

Running at the national championship as a team for the first time since 2002, the Camels battled the icy conditions on a cold and snowy day at the Forest Akers Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich.

Carter placed 19th overall out of 294 total runners, while Love finished 32nd. By placing in the top 40, the duo earned NCAA All-America accolades for the first time. Love and Carter qualified for the 2021 NCAA Championship as individuals, placing 95th and 144th, respectively.

Both Love and Carter started Saturday's 8k event with a little adversity. In addition to the hostile running conditions, the duo was stuck in the mass of runners at the onset of the race. One mile in, Carter was in 89th place, while Love was outside of the top 100. 

But the pair exercised patience and started to rapidly move up the field. By the halfway point in the event, Carter and Love moved into the top 40. Down the homestretch, Carter sprinted to the very end, crossing the line in 25:23.4. Love strode in just after at 25:32.7

First year Jonathan Norton (Vineyard Haven, Mass.) finished third for the Camels in 216th place. Junior Brendan Mellitt (Cheshire, Conn.) and sophomore Matt Scardigno (Port Washington, N.Y.) rounded out the top-five for Conn. Senior Chris Verstandig (Slingerlands, N.Y.) and sophomore Harry Harwood (Woodbury, Conn.) also competed for the Camels.

MIT won the team title with 82 points. Wartburg was the runner-up accumulating 129 points, followed by SUNY Geneseo (168), John Carroll (186) and Pomona Pitzer (193) to round out the top five. John Carroll's Alex Phillip won the individual crown for the second straight year, finishing in 24:37.6.

Senior Julia Curran (Cumberland, Maine) and junior Lauren Hino (Berwyn, Pa.) represented the Connecticut College women's cross country team. Curran, racing in her second national championship event, finished 103rd overall. The senior crossed the line in 23:27.9. Hino finished in 23:58.9, good for 178th. 

On the women's side, Johns Hopkins was the overall winner with 144 points followed by University of Chicago, Wartburg, Carleton and SUNY Geneseo. Kassie Parker from Loras dominated the competition, finishing over 40 seconds ahead of the next competitor. 

Several athletes from both the Connecticut College men's and women's cross country teams will now gear up for the indoor track & field season beginning next month.
