MBB Holds Off Eastern Down the Stretch

Camels navigate foul trouble, extend wining streak to five

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's basketball team never trailed in a 62-56 victory over Eastern Connecticut State University on Sunday afternoon at Luce Field House.

The Camels (5-1 overall) led by as many as 13 points in the second half but had to hold off a late charge from the Warriors, who cut the deficit to three with 1:52 to play. However, Conn didn't allow another basket the rest of the way, and Cam Schainfeld (Newton, Mass.) and Ben Rice (Hanson, Mass.) buried late free throws to provide some cushion.

With their big men battling foul trouble the entire game, the Camels got good production out of their guards. Jarron Flynn (Roslindale, Mass.) paced Conn with 12 points and added nine rebounds while Schainfeld contributed 11 points. Despite playing limited minutes, David Murray (Jackson Heights, N.Y.) finished with a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds to go with three steals.

The Camels opened the game with a 7-1 spurt as Murray was dominant early. The junior forward was everywhere, scoring all seven points while grabbing five offensive rebounds and one steal. The only thing that stopped Murray was his second foul, which forced him to the bench with 16:13 left in the half.

Conn's backcourt picked up the slack in Murray's absence, scoring the next 19 points to build the lead to 26-19. Flynn netted six points during the stretch while Schainfeld and RJ Casey (Nashville, Tenn.) each chipped in five.

Andrew Hartel (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) helped the Camels pad the lead with seven points in the final 3:11 of the half. Conn led by as many as 14 before settling in with a 35-25 advantage at intermission.

Midway through the second half, a three-point play by Rakesh Tibby (East Hartford, Conn.) drew the Warriors to within 48-43 with 9:32 remaining. The Camels responded with a jumper by Schainfeld and three free throws from Elias Espinosa (Ridgefield Park, N.J.) to bring the margin back to double digits.

Conn led 59-47 following a bucket by Murray with 3:47 to play, but Eastern countered with nine straight points to fight its way back into the game. Tyreice Woods (Hartford, Conn.) and Dominick Dao (Terryville, Conn.) banged back-to-back three-pointers, and Benjamin Toussaint (Bellmore, N.Y.) capped the spurt with a three-point play in the paint to make it a one-possession game with 1:52 left.

The Warriors came up empty on their next two possessions and were forced to foul late. Schainfeld cashed in on a one-and-one trip to the line with 14 seconds to go, and Rice later tacked on the game's final point with six seconds left.

With the victory, the Camels extended their winning streak to five games and snapped a four-game skid against the Warriors.

Eastern (2-4 overall) shot 39 percent for the game as Woods and Dao finished in double digits with 16 and 13 points, respectively.

Conn College will next host Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday, November 30 at 7:00 p.m.
