Men's Soccer Tops Williams In Penalty Kicks To Advance To NESCAC Finals

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Junior Jack Marvel (Marion, Mass.) netted the deciding marker in a penalty kick shootout to push the Connecticut College men's soccer team past Williams in the semifinals of the NESCAC tournament on Saturday afternoon at Cole Field. For the second consecutive year, the Camels have secured a spot in the conference title game.

After a scoreless 90 minutes of regulation and an additional two overtime periods, the matchup between the eighth-seeded Camels and second-seeded Ephs was settled in the form of a shootout.

Williams sophomore Tate Michelson led off the shootout with a shot that sailed into the left corner of the net, past Camels keeper Peter Silvester (Smiths Parish, Bermuda). In response, senior Steve Yeonas (McLean, Va.) was the first to step up to the mark for the Camels and slipped his kick by keeper Michael Davis to even the score.

In the subsequent round of attempts, Ephs senior Henry Osborn and Conn sophomore Nate Pilson (Wilmington, Del.) each buried their shots.

Knotted at two scores per team, Williams senior Nathan Song strode to the penalty mark, but his strike clanged off the left post and caromed away. In turn, Augie Djerdjaj (Mahopac, N.Y.) nailed his kick to give Conn the lead.

After Cole Moriello and Alex Robles (Reston, Va.) successfully made their shots for Williams and Conn respectively, Ephs senior Brady Foehl secured the fourth score in five rounds for the hosts.

With the penalty kick count knotted at four, Marvel was tasked to be the fifth shooter for the Camels. A miss would mean that the shootout would continue, while a successful try would ensure Conn a spot in the conference finals. The junior calmly stepped up to the mark and deposited the ball into the bottom right corner of the net, as his teammates rushed the field to celebrate.

Conn advances in the conference tournament as a result of penalty kicks for the second consecutive week, after downing Bowdoin in the NESCAC quarterfinals in similar fashion on Oct. 29.

Prior to the shootout, the two teams were evenly matched throughout regulation and overtime. Both the Camels and the Ephs showcased exceptional defensive efforts, each allowing single-digit shots on goal totals through the 110 minutes of game time.

Sophomores Jack Kelesoglu (Westfield, N.J.), junior Marco Cerezo (Malaga, Spain), and senior Oliver Pinyochon (Newburyport, Mass.) were particularly outstanding for the Camels, playing every second of the high-paced matchup.

Silvester was a steady force in goal, recording four saves. Williams junior Ben Diffey stopped six shots and played the whole game, but did not participate in the shootout.

By advancing to the conference finals, Connecticut College becomes the third eighth-seeded team in NESCAC Tournament history to make the title game.

The Camels are back in the finals for the second straight season, after falling to Tufts in the championship matchup last year. They will play the winner between Amherst and Middlebury on Sunday, November 6 at 12 p.m. at Williams College.
