NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's water polo team fell to Iona College by a 16-8 final on Sunday evening at Lott Natatorium.
Grant Archer (Miami, Fla.) and Chase Fichtner (New Canaan, Conn.) led the Camels with two goals apiece. Sebastian Parilov (Brooklyn, N.Y.) got the starting nod in goal and finished with six saves.
Sole Fratila netted a hat trick to lead the Gaels, who improved to 10-17 overall on the year.
Iona scored the first four goals of the match to open up an early lead. The Camels got on the scoreboard with 24 seconds remaining in the first quarter thanks to a tally by Matthew Maischoss (Malibu, Calif.), but the Gaels snuck in another goal before the end of the period to lead 5-1 after one.
The visitors padded the lead in the second quarter, extending the margin to 9-2 by intermission. Conn's lone goal came from Siaki Nelson (Montgomery, Texas) in the final minute of the stanza.
The Camels opened the second half strong behind back-to-back goals by Fichtner and
Sam Guy (Portland, Ore.), cutting the deficit to five. However, Iona responded with three straight scores to keep Conn at Bay, although Fichtner added his second goal with 39 seconds remaining in the quarter.
Archer added his two goals in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough to spur a Conn comeback. Jack Haddad (Springfield, Mass.) tacked on a late goal to complete the scoring for the hosts, who dropped to 3-12 overall on the season.
Conn College will next play at LIU on Saturday, November 12 at 3 p.m.
