SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Connecticut College women's basketball team put forth a dominant performance en route to a 64-37 victory over Mount Holyoke on Saturday afternoon at Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium. The Camels utilized an impressive second quarter, outscoring the Lyons 24-9, to snap a five-game losing streak.
Conn used its forwards effectively, continuously scoring points in the paint and dominating on the glass. First year
Charlotte Head (Holden, Mass.) scored the first points in her collegiate career, tallying a team-high 13 points, to lead Conn to its first victory since Nov. 12. Forward
Rebecca Oberman-Levine (Hamden, Conn.) recorded 12 points and pulled down seven rebounds.
The Camels got off to a hot start in the first quarter and never looked back. Senior
Jaycie Rojik (Scituate, Mass.) scored the first four points of the game for the visitors, and after buckets by Oberman-Levine, Head, and a 3-pointer from
Avery Burns (Orleans, Mass.), Conn led 11-4 midway through the opening frame. The Camels played a clean first quarter, only committing two turnovers en route to a 17-9 lead heading into the second stanza.
The Lyons came out hot in the second after back-to-back threes from guard Alex Twomey which cut the Conn lead to 19-15. But the Camels' defense buckled down for the remainder of the half, outscoring the hosts 22-3. Oberman-Levine scored nine points on the run, going 4-4 from the field. Classmate
Aislinn McMahon (Andover, Mass.) also contributed to the Camels' lead, added eight points and four boards. The visitors would take a commanding 41-18 advantage into the halftime break.
The second half was more evenly matched, with the remaining two quarters resulting in a defensive stalemate. In the third quarter, the Camels stifled the Lyons, holding them to a 23-percent field goal percentage from the floor. The Conn offense also could not get into a rhythm, but were helped by the strong play of first year
Catherine Cole, who added seven of the Camels' 11 third quarter points.
Heading into the fourth quarter with a 52-27 lead, Conn continued to clamp down defensively, forcing six turnovers. Head scored seven points down the stretch to cement the 64-37 victory for the Camels.
Conn played a balanced game, with 38 points coming from the bench. The Camels also controlled the glass, more than doubling the Lyons in total rebounds, 47-23.
