Women's Ice Hockey Shuts Down Williams 3-0

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team topped Williams 3-0 on Friday night at Lansing Chapman Rink. With the victory, the Camels picked up the their second NESCAC win of the season.

Three separate Conn players tallied goals for the visitors. Morgan Bronstein (Pittsford, N.Y.) and Melanie Conca (Nutley, N.J.) added scores in the second period, while first year Alana Burm (Hingham, Mass.) capped off the victory with a third period goal.

The first period was an evenly matched affair between the conference rivals. Both teams tallied 10 shots on goal but Camels goaltender Abby Wieczorek (Winnetka, Ill.) and Williams stopper Sofia Da Silva kept their respective opponents off the scoreboard.

To begin the second frame, the Camels did not waste time breaking the tie. Just 1:56 in, Claire Sammons (Naperville, Ill.) skated into the Ephs' defensive zone on a fast break. The sophomore fired a wrist shot on net that Da Silva deflected with her blocker. The puck caromed into the slot where Bronstein capitalized on the rebound and found the back of the net for the first goal of the game.

Later on in the period, Conn extended its lead to 2-0 when Casey Godfrey (Redondo Beach, Calif.) won a faceoff at the Williams end of the ice. Godfrey directed the puck to Conca who fired off a quick wrister to the top right corner of the goal that beat Da Silva to her glove side. For Conca, the score was her third on the season in four games thus far.

With 20 minutes remaining, Williams really put the pressure on the Camels. The Ephs tallied 20 shots on goal in the third period alone, but each chance was turned away by Wieczorek. Despite the definitive edge in offensive shots and possessions, Conn managed to increase its lead with a final score by Burm off assists from teammates Miyu Miyazaki (Chiba, Japan) and Galen Kilfeather (Wyndmoor, Pa.).

In the final minutes, Wieczorek and the Conn defense weathered an onslaught on shots from Williams, and ultimately earned the shutout and the 3-0 victory.

Wieczorek was phenomenal throughout, stopping 33 shots, while Da Silva made 22 saves for the Ephs.

Connecticut College (3-1 overall, 2-1 NESCAC) will once again play Williams on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Lansing Chapman Rink.
