Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Men's Ice Hockey Comes Up Just Short Against Salem State

NEW LONDON, Conn. – After a back-and-forth contest which featured five lead changes, the Connecticut College men's ice hockey dropped a hard fought non-conference matchup against Salem State. Vikings forward Keagan O'Donoghue scored with less than three minutes left in regulation to down the Camels 5-4 on Tuesday evening at Dayton Arena.

Salem State got on the scoreboard first when O'Donoghue scored on a powerplay to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead.

The Camels quickly answered back midway through the opening stanza. Following a faceoff win by John Russo (South Windsor, Conn.), the sophomore dished it to senior Anthony Quatieri (Peabody, Mass.) in the slot, who made a deke and beat Vikings goaltender Hunter Thomas on a backhanded shot to tie the game at one.

With less than two minutes to go in the period, Quatieri scored his second goal of the game. Russo took the puck up ice towards the Vikings defensive zone. As he approached the goal, Russo left the puck right in the slot for Quatieri, who got enough on the shot to put it past Thomas to give the Camels their first lead of the game.

The advantage was shortlived however, as just 30 seconds later, the Vikings found the equalizer off a quick wrister from Eamonn Miller that just got by Camels' goaltender Cam Fernandez (Fairfield, Conn.). The score remained knotted at two heading into the first intermission.

The abundance of scoring opportunities continued into the second period. Salem State's Richard Coyle helped his team regain the lead with a goal four minutes into the frame.

But once again, the resiliency of the Camels was on full display. First, Younghoon Choi (Seoul, South Korea) skated into the attacking area and fired a shot on net. The attempt was saved, but Choi was right there to gather his own rebound and tried a second wrister ,that this time, found the back of the net to tie the game at 3-3.

Three minutes later, Lukas Uhler (Upland, Calif.) tallied his first goal of the contest to give the hosts back the lead. Kei Yasuda (Nagoya, Japan) won a loose puck in the neutral zone and skated into the Vikings' zone earning the odd man rush. Yasuda dished it through the slot to Uhler who attempted a wrister on net. Thomas partially blocked the shot, but the puck skipped over his stick and bounced into the back of the net for the fourth goal of the game for Conn.

Not to be outdone, the visitors found the equalizer after earning a power play. Erik Larsson scored to even the game at 4-4 heading into final stanza.

Both defenses buckled down in the last 20 minutes of regulation. Despite a flurry of chances for the Camels, Thomas held strong, holding the hosts off the scoreboard.

Salem State, who were dominated in the possession battle throughout the period, took advantage of one of the few chances they earned. With just under three minutes left to play, O'Donoghue netted his second goal of the game, which turned out to be the deciding factor.

Despite pulling their goalie at the end of the game, the Camels could not tie the score, resulting in a 5-4 victory for Salem State.

Conn outshot the Vikings by a wide margin, 50-16. Thomas recorded an eye-popping 46 saves, while Fernandez stopped 11 shots for the Camels.

Connecticut College (1-5 overall) will travel to Colby for a NESCAC matchup with the Mules on Friday, December 9.
