NEW LONDON, Conn. - Despite a strong third period that featured goals from
Younghoon Choi (Seoul, South Korea) and
Seth Stadheim (Lyme, N.H.), the Connecticut College men's ice hockey team fell to Hamilton 5-2 on Saturday afternoon. The Camels honored their nine seniors before the game, welcoming their families onto the ice for the ceremony.
With a defensive focus, the Camels played the Continentals very physically, and senior goaltender
Mike McHale (Needham, Mass.) did his best to keep Hamilton (9-8, 8-7 NESCAC) scoreless through the first period. With about two minutes to play in the period, however, Hamilton's Matt Gellerman was able to get one by McHale to give Hamilton a 1-0 first period lead.
Five minutes into the second period, Hamilton's Sean McAvoy connected with teammate Grisha Gotovets on a cross-ice path for the second score of the game. Following that score, Connecticut College would kill off a five-minute major penalty. Hamilton, however, would score again when Gellerman fired a shot from his backhand for the score. The second period would end with the Continentals leading 3-0.
In the third, the Continentals would get another off the stick of Gellerman to extend the lead to 4-0. Connecticut College would answer this time when
Colin McCabe (Pembroke, Mass.) connected with Choi to set up a breakaway which he was able to score. Minutes later, Stadheim would punch in a puck out in front of Hamilton goalie Sean Storr's net, tightening the score at 4-2 with about seven minutes to play in the third period. But the Camels scoring would end there. After pulling McHale from net, the Continentals scored on an empty-netter to seal the victory at 5-2.
Connecticut College (5-11-3, 4-9-2 NESCAC) will next face off against Middlebury in their final home game of the year on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
