Men's Ice Hockey Begins NESCAC Tournament Play At Bowdoin This Weekend

2/23/2022 2:43:00 PM

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Connecticut College men's ice hockey team will travel to Bowdoin in the first round of the NESCAC Men's Ice Hockey Championship Tournament on Friday at 7 p.m.

Due to COVID protocols impacting teams throughout the season, all 10 teams are eligible for the 2022 NESCAC Championship.

The 10th-seeded Camels will compete in the NESCAC postseason for the third time in the last four years that the tournament has been held. Connecticut College (5-13-3, 4-12-2 NESCAC) ended the regular season on a five-game losing streak in the extremely competitive NESCAC conference. However, the Camels boast wins over teams who finished at the top half of the standings, most notably second-seeded Trinity and fourth-seeded Wesleyan.

Connecticut College will play Bowdoin (8-9-4, 8-7-3 NESCAC) for the third time this season. The Polar Bears won both matchups, although each game was competitive throughout. Bowdoin won the first contest on January 10 in overtime and stole the second with a five-goal third-period to topple the Camels. Friday's matchup will be the first time that the two team have met in the postseason.

The Camels offensive attack is led by a duo of upperclassmen. Paul Capozzi (Lake Forest, Ill.) leads the team in total points and goals with 16 and nine respectively. Capozzi's nine goals is tied for fourth on the NESCAC leader board. Anthony Quatieri (Peabody, Mass.) is second with 14 total points and is tied for the team-lead in assists with eight.

The defense is anchored by sophomore Sean Detloff (Harrison Township, Mich.) and freshman Devan Newhook (St. John's, Newfoundland). Newhook ranks in the top-15 in the conference in blocked shots.

A trio of goaltenders have manned the net for the Camels this season. Sean Dynan (Reading, Mass.) leads the team in wins with three, while Mike McHale (Needham, Mass.) is the leader in save percentage with .913. Cam Fernandez (Fairfield, Conn.) has also logged minutes between the pipes for the Camels.
