WALTHAM, Mass. - The Connecticut College men's basketball team fell to Brandeis 63-48 on the road in the final non-conference game of the year for the Camels.
The game started off even with the two sides exchanging a series of scores. But a Nolan Hagerty dunk was followed by Collin Sawyer's first of four 3-pointers, and the Judges (10-6) found themselves with an early five-point lead.Â
While scores from the Camels' backcourt tandem of
Jarron Flynn (Roslindale, Mass.) and
Cam Schainfeld (Newton, Mass.) narrowed the deficit, the Judges rattled off a quick 8-0 run to give them their first double-digit lead of the game with the scoreboard reading 21-9 with just under 13 minutes to go in the half.
Determined to keep the game in reach, the Camels rallied behind consecutive scores from freshman guard
Caelin Peters (King of Prussia, PA) to cut the deficit in half. A trio of free throws from sharpshooting freshman
Kevin Baxter (Branford, CT), was followed up by an emphatic three-point play from forward
David Murray (Jackson Heights, NY). The Camels' 12-2 run brought the score to 23-21 with six minutes to go in the opening period.
Looking to regain their control, the Judges turned to the senior leadership of graduate student Tommy Eastman, who sparked a scoring run, which was capped off by another Hagerty slam. The hosts led 29-21 going into the break.
Out of the locker room to start the second half, Eastman and Hagerty picked up right where they left off as the two combined for seven points to give the Judges a 36-23 lead.
After converting on a breakaway layup, sophomore guard
Billy Whelan (Hamilton, MA), dropped in back-to-back 3-pointers followed by scores from Schainfeld and
Andrew Hartel (Cape Elizabeth, Maine). As a result, the Camels managed to once again bring the deficit to just two points, 38-36, with 13 minutes to play.
However, the two-point deficit proved to be the closest that the Camels would come, as freshman forward Toby Harris joined Sawyer in a quick 3-point shooting barrage that gave the Judges their final push en route to their 68-53 victory.
Â
The 15-point win featured four double-digit scorers. Sawyer dropped in four 3-pointers en route to setting the game-high of 16 points. Harris finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Eastman found himself one rebound shy of a double-double, as he finished the game with 15 points and nine rebounds. Hagerty added 12 points in the victory.
The Camels were led by Hartel, who notched 12 points to go with six rebounds. Flynn added nine points, and Schainfeld and Whelan each contributed eight.
Having now concluded non-conference play, the Camels (8-10) will begin their final weekend of conference play when they play host to Hamilton College on Friday night at 7 p.m.
