Women's Lacrosse Cruises to Win Over Smith

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Connecticut College women's lacrosse team downed Smith 18-3 to begin its season with a 2-0 record. The Camels traveled to Northhampton on Friday night for the non-conference matchup and utilized a balanced offensive attack to defeat the Pioneers.

12 different Camels recorded at least one goal including seven from members of the freshman class. Defensively, the away team stifled the Pioneers' offense by allowing only seven shots on goal throughout the game.

Connecticut College (2-0) started fast and never looked back. Nearly five minutes into the first quarter, Emma Ognibene (New Canaan, Conn.) scored the teams' first goal. Classmate Aine Downey (Brookline, Mass.) followed suit three minutes later on a free-position attempt to make it an early 2-0 lead. Smith's Sydney Havlick would answer to cut the lead in half with 6:40 to go in the opening frame. Only 18 seconds later, the Camels would regain its two-goal lead on a score by senior Gianna Ferrara (Bayshore, N.Y.). In the final minute of the quarter, Conn would tally two more goals by Emily O'Rourke (Concord, Mass.) and Kelly Wolin (Sudbury, Mass.) to conclude the first with a 5-1 lead.

The second frame was more of the same for the Camels. The visitors put on a dominant performance outscoring the Pioneers 4-0 on two goals by Hailey Fahey (Norwich, Vt.), and a goal each from Julianna Ingrassia (Garden City, N.Y.) and Caroline Bruce (Acton, Mass.). Conn's defense held Smith to only three shots on goal during the second quarter and entered the locker room at halftime with a 9-1 lead.

Following the break, Havlick scored her second goal of the game, but after that it was all Camels. Conn put up seven third quarter goals to open up the lead even further. Sydney Weber (Hanover, Mass.) scored her first career collegiate goal 7:28 minutes into the frame, and added another one just 58 seconds later.

With the game well in hand, the Camels utilized game management tactics to run down the clock. They outscored Smith 2-1 in the fourth and concluded the blowout win by a score of 18-3.

Violette Nidds (Ridgewood, N.J.) and Sadie AbuHaidar (Park City, Utah) split time in goal for Conn.

Connecticut College will open their NESCAC schedule at home against Middlebury on Saturday at 12 p.m.
