GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - The Connecticut College men's lacrosse team was defeated by Adelphi University, 10-7, Monday evening on the road. The Panthers, who compete in Division II, took on the Camels in a rare non-conference, inter-division matchup.
The contest was even throughout, but a seven-goal performance from Panthers' senior Joseph Duchnowski and a scoring outburst in the fourth quarter were the difference makers for the host team.
The first quarter opened up in a stalemate with neither side able to find the back of the net for almost seven minutes. Duchnowski scored the initial goal with 8:28 remaining to put Adelphi on the board. The Camels answered less than one minute later when senior
Nick Farnham (Falmouth, Maine) scored unassisted to tie the score. The two teams traded goals for the remainder of the quarter, and the horn sounded with the game tied at two.
Adelphi (3-0) dominated the second quarter, shutting out the visitors and scoring three goals of their own, including two more from Duchnowski. Conn recorded seven shots on goal but could not get it past goalkeeper Dylan Renner.
Out of the halftime break, the Panthers scored on a Jason Rebaudo goal to go up 6-2. But the Camels rattled off the next four tallies unanswered to knot the game at six-all, while outscoring the Panthers 4-1 through 15 minutes of work. Four different players got on the stat sheet, with goals from Farnham,
Jared Rainville (Watertown, Conn.),
Gus Mazzocca (West Hartford, Conn.) and
JJ Ford.
Entering the final stanza, Adelphi stormed back with three goals in the first 10 minutes of the quarter, including the fifth and sixth tallies of the game for Duchnowski. Trailing 9-6, Ford was able to net one more for the Camels to draw closer. But Duchnowski added his final score of the game with 1:18 left to seal the victory for the Panthers.
Camels goaltender
Will Rice (New Rochelle, N.Y.) stopped 10 shots.
Brendan Trovato (Sudbury, Mass.) and
Jack Venturelli (Duxbury, Mass.) were excellent defensively, causing four turnovers each.
Connecticut College (1-2) will return home to play Hamilton on Saturday, March 19 at 1 p.m.
