Women's Lacrosse Defeats Nazareth In Non-Conference Matchup

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Connecticut College women's lacrosse team got back in the win column with a 10-7 win over non-conference opponent Nazareth on Thursday afternoon. After suffering their first loss of the season on Saturday against Middlebury, the Camels bounced back with a victory at Silfen Field, fueled by a balanced offensive attack and an aggressive defensive approach.

Early on, Connecticut College looked to set the tone, but it was Nazareth's Emma States who put the Golden Flyers on the board first just under five minutes into the first quarter. But the Camels answered with three consecutive goals. Freshman Emma Ognibene (New Canaan, Conn.) netted the game-tying score followed by a Alyssa Pietz (Brentwood, N.H.) goal on the advantage. After a yellow card was issued on Conn, the home team, down a player, utilized a fast-break with crisp passing that ended on a goal from Gianna Ferrara (Bay Shore, N.Y.) off an assist by Ognibene. The Camels held a 3-1 lead at the end of the opening frame.

At the start of the ensuing quarter, the Golden Flyers quickly erased the two-goal deficit. Emma Robinson and Maren Wallace were able to get shots past Camels' goaltender Violette Nidds (Ridgewood, N.J.) to tie the score. With 2:31 left in the half, junior Emily Yorns (Longmeadow, Mass.) gave Conn the 4-3 lead. Two minutes later, Julianna Ingrassia (Garden City, N.Y.) scored on the final possession of the quarter, and the Camels entered the break with a 5-3 advantage.

Ingrassia followed up with her second goal for the opening score of the quarter. Freshman Greta Panke (Milldale, Conn.) followed suit with a tally of her own to give the Camels their largest lead of the game. Nazareth (0-4) would get a goal from Annie Rubel with 2:38 remaining in the third stanza to cut the lead to 7-4.

Facing a three-goal deficit with 15 minutes remaining, the Golden Flyers came out with a much more aggressive approach. With 12:37 remaining, States cut to the net and scored on a magnificent no-look, over-the-shoulder shot. Less than one minute later, States again made a nice move past a Camel defender and found the back of the net to trim the lead to 7-6. Conn took a timeout to regroup and halt the Nazareth momentum, and the strategy paid off. Junior Hailey Fahey (Norwich, Vt.) scored back-to-back goals to widen the lead back to three. States responded with her fourth goal of the game off a free position attempt with only 1:10 remaining. Following the ensuing draw control, with States on the attack again, Mae Emerson (Deerfield, Mass.) forced a crucial turnover to ice the game. Panke would add one more score with :01 second left to conclude the contest as a 10-7 victory for the Camels.

Connecticut College (3-1) outshot the Golden Flyers 27-17 throughout the game. Nazareth's Katie Lawrence played outstanding in net with 12 saves. Nidds also showcased a solid performance, stopping five shots. Emerson led the Camels with four ground balls, and Ingrassia and Panke led the team in points with three each.

The Camels will travel to Hamilton for a NESCAC matchup on Saturday, March 19 at 12 p.m.
