Women's Water Polo Splits First League Games

3/20/2022 1:06:00 AM

WASHINGTON, Penn. - The Connecticut College women's water polo team opened league play with a 1-1 record on Saturday. The Camels downed Utica 13-6, and followed up with a setback against Washington & Jefferson College.

Connecticut College (1-5) was coming off a loss in non-league action against Wittenberg on Friday. The games played in a shallow-deep pool, the first time that many of the Conn student-athletes have competed at that type of facility.

In the opening matchup, the Camels defeated Utica (0-1) by a seven-goal margin thanks in part to the first collegiate goals scored by Kendall Foley (Sammamish, Wash.) and Gicel Zuniga (Norwalk, Conn.).

Olivia Fechner-Lewis (Berkeley, Calif.) and Zoe Starzenski (Montreal, Quebec) split time in goal for Conn College during the three-game stretch. Junior Maria Sell (San Mateo, Calif.) accumulated 15 goals throughout to lead the Camels offensively. Sophomore Sarah Franco (Weston, Conn.) helped create turnovers and facilitated opportunities that led to scores.

In the second game of the day, the Camels were defeated in a close matchup against Washington & Jefferson (2-3), 13-11.

"With only one of our 14 players ever having played a college game in a shallow-deep pool, I was very impressed to see how much we improved from last night to today," said Connecticut College head coach Matt Anderson. "We are getting better, and almost beat the home team, Washington & Jefferson, who currently sits in first in our league."

Connecticut College will wrap up the weekend series in Pennsylvania with games against Penn State-Behrend and Grove City College on Sunday before returning home to host a series of conference competitions on April 9-10.
